News: Recently, President of India inaugurated the annual general meeting and Biennial Conference of the Asia Pacific Forum on Human Rights in New Delhi celebrating the landmark 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights (UDHR).

About:
• The Asia Pacific Forum on Human Rights (APF) is a coalition of national human rights institutions (NHRIs) from the Asia Pacific region. It was established in 1996 and comprises 17 full members and eight associate members.
• Key role of APF are Promotes Human Rights, Supports NHRIs, investigates violence, shapes laws and policies and promotes partnerships.

Important points raised by President:
• Urged balancing human rights and environmental concerns
• She highlighted the moral duty of the international community to protect human rights beyond legal frameworks.
• She reiterated India's Constitution has supported universal adult franchise rights, leading to gender justice and dignity protection.
• She urged not to isolate human rights issues and equally prioritize the protection of the wounded Mother Nature.

Why are human rights important?
• Inherent Dignity: Human rights are rooted in the belief that every individual possesses inherent dignity, simply by virtue of being human.
• Protection from Abuse: Human rights provide a framework for protecting individuals from abuse, discrimination, and injustice.
• Individual Freedom: Human rights protect the rights and freedoms of individuals, including freedom of expression, religion, and assembly.
• Equality and Non-Discrimination
• Peace and Stability: Societies that uphold human rights are often more peaceful and less prone to conflict because they address grievances and ensure that individuals have a stake in the social contract.
• Protection of Vulnerable Groups: Human rights are especially critical for protecting vulnerable and marginalized groups, including women, children, refugees, and minorities. They ensure that these groups are not left behind and receive equal protection under the law.
• Progress and Social Change: Human rights have played a pivotal role in advancing social progress and sparking social change. Movements for civil rights, women's rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and other social justice causes have been grounded in human rights principles.
